When to Cut Your Losses and Move On

A toxic environment can affect emotionally and physically. The best course to deal with such a situation is to move on to another place as soon as possible. Cutting losses as early as possible is better to keep fit mentally and physically. This is a well-known strategy in the business world, and cutting losses soon is much better than losing for a long time in the hope that the environment will improve. That is also a fact in many career courses. You need to move to a different environment that matches your personality.

There are mutlitple indiactions of such enivorments. First, if the majority of the individuals in the organization are using the place to benefit by utilizing the environment and resources while affecting other coworkers directly or indirectly, we can conclude that this place is toxic, where bad actors grow and kill good actors. This is true in nature and human relations. If you try to grow apples in salt water, it defines the laws of nature. That’s true in the workplace, so if you know that the workplace has a reputation for being a harmful and toxic environment, you are away unless you have enough people with you who can change that environment and are willing to go the battle to change it. Otherwise, save time, energy, and health and look for a better place.

Another way to know if a place is a decaying environment is by checking the leadership of that place, starting from the top leadership of the organization that you will join. You are safe if they project similar mental and ethical outlooks that match yours. If you are looking for a flourishing organization, inspect the lower leadership you will work directly with. They have been in that position for a long time if they are weak or knowledgeable of their trade. Then, this reflects the top management. The leadership of any organization has a significant impact on aspects of that place. If your workplace recognizes and impacts your work minimally or rewards the wrong people, you are not in the right place.

Alikes attract each other; therefore, if you think the workplace is not a good fit, it is your right to look for a better place and life. This can sometimes be risky and require lots of courage, effort, and thinking. However, good things will come if you leave your comfort zone or familiar zone to a risky and awkward zone to reach your goals.
